Jonathon Zaczek was the surprise (I think to himself as well) winner of the 2009 Winnipeg Blitz Championship Wednesday night at the University of Winnipeg, defeating Jason Repa in the final match.

 

Twenty players contested the knockout tournament, with the lowest eight rated players contesting for spots 13-16 in a preliminary play-in round. 

 

Jonathon also won a 14 player, 4 round Swiss tournament that started just before 10 pm; with Alex Nikouline, Bella Iomdina and Aaron Green splitting second prize.

 

So Zaczek went 12-0 for the night, leaving no doubt he was the best blitz player on the night.

Not bad for a guy who is concerned that G/120 often leaves him in time trouble.

In the Consolation Swiss for the eliminated players, Nikoukine, Babb and Kapstan and Lipic tied for 1st, with Lipic taking the top U1800 prize; the others splitting first place money

 

Francis Trueman and Sashika Kumaragamage split  the U1400 prize.
