A youth active chess tournament was held at the Medieval Fesival at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cooks Creek MB, yesterday. There were 16 players and Zack Spencer took clear first with 4.0 / 4.0. Winning second place in a playoff was Travis Taylor. Zack and Travis were the two combatants in a human chess match at intervals later in the day. Zack won the match 2 games out of 3. In an earlier post I had speculated that the human chess match may have been the first fully-costumed human chess event held in Manitoba. However Jeff Babb tells me that a fully-costumed human chess game was held at the Icelandic Festival in Gimli over 20 years ago featuring Fletcher Baragar playing against Icelandic grandmaster, Fridrik Olafsson. There's a good picture of yesterday's human chess event on page A5 of today's Winnipeg Free Press.
