The Manitoba Chess Association will have its giant chess set and a few boards at a summer festival in Joe Zuken Park today (Saturday) from noon to 4:00. Address is 140 Meade St., between Sutherland & Euclid Ave. in Point Douglas. Come out and join in the fun. Supplemental: Blair, Ken and I were at Joe Zuken Park for the summer festival. We had the giant board as well as a few tournament sized boards set up. All the boards were busy, although I suppose it should be added that some youngsters seemed to be more interested in using the large pieces as bowling pins rather than as chess pieces. Ouch. We brought a few clocks as well and some of the youngsters - Sherri and Brittney in particular - seemed to know a little about clocks already. Impressive! Free smokies, refreshments and dessert generated a small crowd, and the kids also enjoyed an inflatable arena to play in. A knowledgeable staffer by the name of Victor had some interesting information about the Park and its history. I played some chess with volunteer Wally. Thanks for the games, Wally! It was a fun event until the sudden and overwhelmng downpour drenched those who didn't flee the rain. Still, Blair's wish to give the large chess board a wash was accomplished. Heh. Nigel Hanrahan |
