Sunday, December 2

This will be a 5 round active-style tournament for young chess players. It will be held at the University of Winnipeg.

The time control is as follows: each player will get a maximum of roughly 30 minutes to play the game.

The five game times are at the following times:

The Manitoba Junior is the highest-level junior chess tournament in Manitoba. You have to be under 20 years old. Apart from that, there are no age or school-grade restrictions. The winner of this tournament gets travel sponsorship to the Canadian Junior Championship to be held somewhere in Canada in early 2008.

Registration time is 9:30AM on Sunday December 2.

The entrance fee is $20.

The location of the tournament is room 2C14 at the University of Winnipeg.

Grand Prix finals and Mike Shpan Memorial

Kevin Gentes dropped out of Group A giving the rest of the field two rest days. Sam Lipnowski and Tony Boron have 1.5 points after two rounds in that group. Joseph Van Wyk also has 1.5 points to lead the Group B. Daniel Wiebe and Weixi Liu lead the Group C with the same magic number - point and a half. The leader of Group D, Aaron Green, is the only GP player with a perfect score.
Of course in the swiss tournament the picture is completely different. Five players have the perfect score in Mike Shpan Memorial. They are Waldemar Schulz, Les Mundwiler, Dezheng Kong, Harley Greenberg, and Simon Fromme. One more surprise of the tournament is Myron Kernetsky's playing again after 17 years of break. Way to go Myron, hope our other semiretired players will follow your example.
Games and crosstables will be updated tonight, meanwhile check the round results:

Twenty one players have registered for Mike Shpan Memorial. With 16 GP finals participants this makes the largest November/December tournament ever. And I am sure few more players will join the Mike Shpan Memorial with a first round bye. Way to go guys!
The first round had its share of upsets. Check the results below to find them.
Crosstables are posted, the games will be posted as soon as I and Tony Boron will enter them.
PS Sorry, I have not announced that the games were posted on Wednesday. Most of you found them anyway :-)
