Upsets, semi-upsets, and near upsets marked the first round of the 2012 May TNT. But with 12 players rated over 1800, the favorites will have to work to finish near the top. On Board One, Sam Cleto upset Nilo Moncal, while Cody Baron topped a rusty Jordan Kwiatek. Young Derek Ma drew Blair Rutter, in his best result to date. Waldemar Schulz barely survived against Ryne Swift, and second seed Boron held on for a draw against Steven de Groot.
